Professor, Executive Research Director, Yoshiyuki Sankai (Center for Cybernics Research) to Receive the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon

Professor, Executive Research Director, Yoshiyuki Sankai of Center for Cybernics Research (CCR), was chosen as the recipient of the Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon (Shijuho sho) for the 2019(Reiwa 1) Autumn Conferment.


The Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon (Shijuho sho) are awarded to individuals who have made inventions and discoveries in science and technological fields, individuals who made outstanding achievement in fields of academia, sports, art or culture.


Professor Sankai was awarded for his achievements in the research of human/medical engineering. He became the pioneer of new field called Cybernics that fuses the function of human, robots and information systems. This led to inventions like the world's first Wearable Cyborg HAL that integrates the function of the brain-nerve, robot and informational system. Social implementation of HAL towards medical, elderly care, living support as a human assistive technology are in progress both in Japan and outside Japan.


Professor Sankai will be officially recognized as the recipient on November 3; and the medal awarding ceremony will be held on December 17.
